I’ve talked a lot recently about how I love Fall. Add one more thing to the list about Fall that I love. It is that fact that we can have bonfires!!!
Bonfires are fun at any time of the year, but I feel like they’re extra special when the temperatures drop a little lower and the heat coming off the fire is welcomed. Camping is also a big part of the Fall where I’m from. And in my opinion, you can’t go camping unless you have a bonfire.
So what are my favorite things to cook over the open flame?? I have a few… savory and sweet.
Yep. I went there. Right off the bat. If you make a bowl of tinfoil and place some tortilla chips, cheese, and whatever else you have on hand, you will have yourself the most delicious snack. Just be sure to cover the nachos completely in tinfoil to prevent them from catching fire. Let them heat up for about 2-3 minutes and wa-la!
2. Banana Splits:
Ooohhh my goodness gracious! Grab a banana, make a slit in it lengthwise and stuff it with your favorites. (Chocolate chips, marshmallows, peanut butter, etc. Whatever you can imagine.) Wrap it all in tin foil and carefully heat it over the fire.
3. Outside the box S’mores:
Classic s’mores are hard to beat. But try replacing the pure chocolate with peanut butter, Reese’s, KitKats, anything and everything! The options are endless and the flavors are nonstop once you get creative with it.
4. Cookie S’mores:
Replace the graham crackers with your favorite cookies and boom. Experience life as never before. My Nana’s chocolate chip cookies are the bomb.com. And they make a regular, everyday s’more seem gourmet. Try it- grab your favorite chocolate chip cookie as the base to a s’more! You won’t be sorry.
5. Mini Grilled Cheeses:
I’m a child at heart in the fact that a grilled cheese is truly my favorite thing in the world. (I know… I say that about every food. You should hear my favorite song list……) Take some buttered bread and get it toasty over the fire. Then place the two pieces with cheese in between on tin foil, wrap it up, and put it over the open flame for a little bit to let the cheese melt. Y-u-m. (Add some ham for extra deliciousness.)
6. Camp Fire Sundaes:
So picture an award winning sundae, minus the ice cream. Take any cone of your choosing and stuff it full of anything of…you guessed it… your choosing. Chocolate, mini marshmallows, nuts, fruit bits, different flavored chips (chocolate, white chocolate, butterscotch, etc..). Wrap the cone tightly in tin foil and let all the yumminess get ooey-gooey. Then dive in. (I would suggest eating this one from the bottom up… from personal experience. )
7. Inside Out Caramel Apple:
This requires a little prep work. Take an apple (or few) and core it and hollow it out a little. Then stuff it with butterscotch chips. Wrap it in tin foil, let ‘er go on the open flame for a few minutes and then enjoy! (Try creating your own combinations of stuffing. Brown sugar and walnuts anyone?!?)
8. Bonfire Potatoes:
Think French fries with a little less crunch, but all the flavor! Take some red or new potatoes, wash them well, slice them into wedges, and place into foil packs. Sprinkle salt, pepper, olive oil, and Parmesan cheese over them and the fold the packs up. Place over the fire for about 10ish minutes (or until tender), flipping every so often. Let cool and enjoy!!
It probably goes without saying, but be sure to let the food cook down before eating it. Anything coming off the flames will be sure to burn you.
