Each year for Christmas my mom gives me a devotional. They all come with a little inscription and truly mean so much to me. But- there is one devotional that sticks out to me. It’s one that kept me engaged throughout the entire year (Which is hard to do….)- Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling. Though I have had this for a few years (it was originally published in 2004), it is a devotional that I find myself rereading countless times.
Here are 3 reasons why it is my all time favorite:
- The messages in the devotional are written as if Jesus is talking to me. The simple change of words is so powerful. When I read the bible, I typically don’t think of it as God saying those words directly to me, but Sarah has written beautiful daily inspirations in a way that makes me feel as if He is. It is a powerful phenomenon.
2. The daily message always seemed to hit home. Regardless of what life was doing around me, I was always able to tie in the day’s message to what I was experiencing. It seemed relevant to what was happening in my life.
3. It was easy to understand. Sometimes I feel that devotionals are written above my typical understanding of the bible and I struggle to comprehend what I am reading. Jesus Calling is the complete opposite. It is extremely easy to understand, but the content isn’t lessened in its easy readability.
