Whew! So if you are planning a beach trip with a baby, you may want to check out the post I wrote before our beach trip. This post is where I planned out what I was bringing in order to make it an easy trip. We got back from our trip yesterday. Though the forecast showed storms every single day, all day, we really lucked out. We had a full week of sunshine. It did storm some in the evenings, but that didn’t really mess anything up.
Beachin’ it up with baby is definitely a new experience and a far cry from 100% relaxing. However, it was so much fun to see William’s little face light up at the sight of the water and sand. I would say it was a successful trip, for sure. As I reflect on it, I’d have to say the two star items that I’d highly, highly, highly recommend you bring along are:
I know that a tent is a fairly common item to pack for the beach, but a pack-n-play is a little different. We saw about 4 other families on the beach that had children William’s age or younger (9 months). We were the only folks out there who had a pack-n-play. I’m sure some people were looking at us like…”Common…. seriously?!?!”. But- I could still see the jealousy pouring out of their eyes, as I read my book and William played happily in the shade in a safe, enclosed area. Do it! Bring the pack-n-play. (We had an old sheet that we threw down on the sand, and then set the pack-n-play on top of that. This kept the sand out as much as possible.)
I’d also recommend talking with whoever you are vacationing with, or at least your spouse, and come up with a game-plan for who will get to totally “relax” and who will be on “baby duty”. There were a few times when William got hot, and the baby pool wasn’t cutting it with keeping him cool. My mom, Wesley, or I would take William up to the house to cool off. We also did naps as normal at the house, so someone had to be up there for that. We all worked out a system and shared the “baby duty” so everyone got a chance to fully relax.
Taking a trip with a baby has challenges, but I think being prepared helps to get everything off on the right foot. 🙂 After you’ve taken a trip and reflect on it, what would you do the same? Is there anything you’d do differently? Comment below.
